The Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine was the worst nuclear reactor accident even happened in history. On 26 April 1986 one of the four reactors at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded. This news was deliberately suppressed by the USSR. “The fallout, 400 times more radioactivity than was released at Hiroshima … triggered an epidemic of thyroid cancer in children”. The Cuban government established Chernobyl children’s programme in 1986. From then onwards, the Cuban government has helped Ukrainian children and teenagers, who underwent the catastrophic event and required medical attention. Ill Ukrainians have been treated free of charge in Cuba. A Ukraine-based NGO estimated that Cuba spent at least 350 million dollars on medications. This “vast aid project … has now benefited more than 24,000 people. According to Cuban authorities, this help will continue as long as Ukraine needs it”.
