International Campaign against State Violence
on Marriage Migrants
Marriage Migrants United Globally to fight for Rights
On November 25, the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women, AAM♀RE (Action Network for Marriage Migrant Rights and Empowerment) launches the International Campaign against State Violence, unVEIL. This international campaign exposes the state repression to marriage migrants, particularly on unjust border control, discriminatory immigration policies and criminalization. The founding member organizations of AAM♀RE include organizations from Taiwan, Hong Kong Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Australia, Canada, Europe, Philippines and Indonesia.
The Alliance for Human Rights Legislation for Immigrants and Migrants (AHRLIM) also joins this international campaign. In Taiwan, as the kick-off activity to join the international campaign, the AHRLIM will hold a press conference/protest action in front of the Executive Yuan in the morning of November 25, to expose the state repression to marriage migrants, including those from Southeast Asia and from Mainland China. Speakers of the press conference include a Vietnamese member of TransAsia Sisters Association in Taiwan (TASAT) and an officer from the organization of Mainland Chinese marriage migrants and families. They will have a skit visualizing the state violence against marriage migrants, on both Southeast Asian and Mainland Chinese women. By unveiling the traditional wedding dresses of Southeast Asian and Mainland Chinese women, the skit will expose the unjust laws and regulations that have made marriage migrants in Taiwan vulnerable to various forms of violence.
After years of struggles, the AHRLIM had pressured the government and legislature to amend the Immigration Act. However, various unjust articles in the Immigration Act were not reformed yet. The AHRLIM urges the government to further reform the Immigration Act. Additionally, the AHRLIM have already come up with a draft amendment to the Cross-Strait People's Relation Act, the law regulating the marriage migrants from Mainland China (different from Immigration Act due to the political tension between Mainland China and Taiwan). In this protest action, the AHRLIM will highlight the main reforms in their draft amendment to demand for full protection of the rights and welfare of marriage migrants from Mainland China.
After the press conference and protest action, the AHRLIM will go to the Executive Yuan to have a dialogue with the government officials, urging the government to end all forms of violence against marriage migrants. .
